Far Ranger ambush near the binary stars

The Last Jedi

The Far Ranger ambush near the binary stars turns Jax Pavan’s attempted escape into a narrowing trap: pursued by Darth Vader’s fleet, he steers the damaged freighter into the hazardous matter stream between the two stars, where Imperial ships close in from both sides. The encounter ends with the Far Ranger disabled, Laranth Tarak dead, I-Five destroyed, and Thi Xon Yimmon captured.

The Fleet Closes In

Jax Pavan arrives on the bridge with Laranth Tarak and orders the Far Ranger out of hyperspace, warning that Darth Vader is pursuing them. The ship’s automatic systems bring it safely into normal space. Den Dhur yields the copilot’s seat to Jax, who activates the heads-up display as the crew tries to assess the threat.

The answer comes from the ships appearing around them. Though the Twins remain millions of kilometers away, their light makes the void blaze; around the Far Ranger, the arriving vessels form a rough half sphere and move to cut off retreat. Jax identifies the force as a large contingent of the 501st attack fleet, Vader’s Fist. He suspects that a larger cruiser in the formation may have used its gravity generators to pull them from hyperspace, but does not reach out through the Force to determine which ship carries Vader.

Jax chooses the matter stream between the stars as the route most likely to offer escape. He transfers the controls to his station and punches the ion drive, driving the Far Ranger into the brilliant veil of matter and energy while the Imperial ships pursue from behind and from the flanks. The maneuver does not leave the fleet behind. As the freighter nears the end of its passage through the stream, it emerges into a pocket formed by another contingent of ships. Jax turns the vessel back toward the route they have just crossed, but five more ships appear from the Twins’ torrent. He recognizes without probing that Vader is aboard the central ship, and orders the crew to fire everything they have.

The Stasis Trap and Laranth’s Sacrifice

The five-ship formation does more than block the Far Ranger’s retreat. Jax realizes that the ships are generating a stasis field together, each contributing a section of its invisible web as they move in exact coordination. The freighter slows so drastically that even Jax’s thoughts labor against the field; his Jedi training keeps him from being frozen outright. He throws the ship into reverse, but the hull only groans and shimmies as the formation holds it fast and draws it toward the flagship. Before the crew can escape, the field abruptly gives way to a tractor beam, restoring subjective time. Jax recognizes the change as an opening and orders everyone to abandon ship.

The order does not reach Laranth in time to keep her from the dorsal weapons bay. Den Dhur finds her above the half-lowered ladder, injured and working at a control panel that appears to have imploded. Through the transparisteel cowling, he sees that the dorsal turbolaser is aimed point-blank into the belly of Vader’s ship. Laranth fires despite Jax’s warning; the power surge and violent backlash throw Den down the passage, while the blast damages the Far Ranger and leaves Laranth gravely wounded.

Jax reaches the battery and pulls at the warped ladder with Den’s help. Laranth falls into his arms with shattered bones, a nearly severed lekku, and shrapnel lodged in her neck near a cortical artery. She breathes something into Jax’s ear, then dies. Her action has disabled the stasis field, as Darth Vader later acknowledges, but its cost is immediate: the Far Ranger is crippled, and Jax must face the consequences of her death while the Imperial boarding party is still aboard.

Vader’s Seizure of Yimmon

The abandonment order could not clear the Far Ranger before Darth Vader and his stormtroopers reached the aft passage. They blocked I-Five and Thi Xon Yimmon from escaping, while Jax Pavan rose to confront them after Laranth Tarak’s death. Vader’s red lightsaber answered Jax’s blue-green blade, but the clash was interrupted when a stormtrooper reported the Emperor’s orders. Vader silenced him and made plain that obedience would not dictate how he carried them out: he intended to take from Jax the person Jax had guarded for months.

Vader turned toward Thi Xon Yimmon. The Cerean’s eyes rolled back and he slumped against the bulkhead; Vader arrested his fall with a grasping motion, and two stormtroopers seized his arms. Jax and I-Five leapt together as the troopers opened fire. When Den Dhur could see again, Jax stood in the debris-strewn passage with his lightsaber raised, but Vader, the troopers, and Yimmon had vanished. The capture made Vader’s purpose unmistakable: he had come not merely to destroy the Far Ranger or kill Jax, but to take Yimmon from him.

The immediate cost of the attack was visible throughout the ship. The Far Ranger was dead in space and drifting toward the matter stream; I-Five’s battered, blackened head lay on the deck. Jax and Den had survived the confrontation, but the crew had been broken apart: Laranth was dead, I-Five was incapacitated, and Yimmon was in Vader’s hands. Escape now meant abandoning the ship and carrying those losses with them.

Escape Through the Twins

Before leaving the Far Ranger, Jax Pavan carried the tree with him, took the only blaster Laranth Tarak had left intact, and touched her ruined face. The ship shuddered around him as he reached the life pod, where Den Dhur was trying to reconnect the many wires trailing from I-Five’s neck to the droid’s battered head. Jax thought he saw I-Five’s optics flicker, but could not be sure; even at the moment of escape, the possibility of the droid’s survival remained uncertain. Den noticed the tree in Jax’s lap and asked whether Laranth had given it to him, leaving the question—and the object she had entrusted to him—as the survivors’ last connection to her.

Jax launched the pod into the Twins’ tidal bore. They endured long, agonizing moments before finally clearing the stars’ gravity. The escape brought Jax and Den out of the immediate danger, but not back to what they had been: Laranth was dead, Yimmon was a prisoner, and I-Five survived, if at all, only as a damaged head in Den’s hands. The Far Ranger ambush thus ends not in victory over Vader’s force, but in a narrow escape carrying the attack’s losses into whatever came next.
